Infographic: The Criminalization of Young People of Color

The 1990s saw widespread panic over the notion that there would be a proliferation of youth “superpredators” in the coming years. The superpredators never arrived, yet the myth was powerful enough to spawn increased policing and detention of young people, particularly young people of color, who are still paying the price for these damaging and ineffective policies. We are now in the midst of a similar panic moment, spawned by a federal administration dead set on depicting all young immigrants of color as violent gang members. To separate myth from reality, Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) and NJJN have come together to present this one-page brief infographic in order to separate myths from the reality and highlight the damaging effects of increased policing and detention on young people of color.
